Why Cancer Expert MD Was Founded

Cancer Expert MD was founded to help patients and families better understand increasingly complex cancer information and to provide a clearer framework for discussing treatment options with their own oncology teams.

Cancer care has become highly individualized. The same diagnosis can behave very differently from one patient to another depending on tumor biology, stage, molecular characteristics, genetic mutations, biomarkers, prior treatment response, overall health, and other factors.

Dr. Dean Silver, MD, MD (H), and Dr. April Lindmeier, DHSc, co-founded Cancer Expert MD around the belief that patients deserve access to understandable, personalized cancer education that brings these different pieces together.

Our Philosophy

Cancer Expert MD believes that cancer education should be:

Personalized
No two patients and no two cancers are exactly alike. Understanding the biology of the individual tumor is central to making sense of available treatment approaches.

Evidence-Informed
Cancer information should be grounded in scientific research, clinical evidence, and a clear understanding of what is established, what is emerging, and what remains investigational.

Integrative
Modern cancer education should consider conventional oncology together with evidence-informed supportive and integrative strategies when appropriate.

Understandable
Cancer medicine can be overwhelming. Our goal is to make complex information easier to understand so patients and families can ask better questions and participate more effectively in conversations with their medical teams.

Understanding the Biology of Cancer

Cancer is not one disease.

Modern cancer care may involve pathology, molecular and genomic testing, next-generation sequencing, circulating tumor DNA, circulating tumor cells, hormone receptors, HER2 status, PD-L1, tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, mismatch repair, inherited mutations, and other biomarkers.

These findings may help explain why a cancer is growing and whether specific treatments or targeted approaches may be relevant.

Cancer Expert MD helps patients understand how this information may fit together.

Understanding Treatment Approaches

Cancer treatment may include:

Surgery

Radiation therapy

Chemotherapy

Targeted therapy

Immunotherapy

Hormone therapy

Antibody drug conjugates

Radiopharmaceuticals

Cellular therapies

Other emerging treatments

The role of each treatment depends on the individual cancer and the individual patient.

Cancer Expert MD helps explain how these treatment categories work, why they may be recommended, and what questions patients may wish to discuss with their oncologists.

Integrative Cancer Education

Cancer Expert MD also provides education about integrative approaches that may be discussed alongside conventional cancer care.

These may include nutrition, metabolic health, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, vitamins, minerals, nutraceuticals, botanical compounds, immune support, repurposed medications, and other supportive or emerging strategies.

The evidence supporting these approaches varies considerably. Some have stronger human clinical evidence than others.

The goal is not to replace conventional oncology. The goal is to help patients understand the potential scientific rationale, limitations, interactions, and questions that should be discussed with their treating physicians.

Molecular and Genomic Testing

Personalized cancer education increasingly depends on understanding molecular information.

Testing may identify mutations, receptors, pathways, biomarkers, or other characteristics that help guide discussions about targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and other treatments.

Cancer Expert MD helps patients better understand what these tests measure and how the results may relate to treatment discussions.

Emerging Cancer Research

Cancer research continues to evolve rapidly.

Areas of interest may include:

Cancer vaccines

CAR T-cell therapy

Natural killer cell therapies

Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte therapy

New targeted medications

Antibody drug conjugates

Radiopharmaceuticals

Artificial intelligence-assisted cancer analysis

Liquid biopsy technologies

Functional treatment testing

Personalized cancer monitoring

Not every emerging treatment is appropriate for every patient, and many approaches remain investigational.

Cancer Expert MD helps distinguish between established treatment, promising research, and therapies that still require further evidence.

Helping Patients Ask Better Questions

A major purpose of Cancer Expert MD is to help patients become more informed.

Cancer care can involve many specialists, tests, medications, and difficult decisions. Patients may not always know what questions to ask or how different pieces of information fit together.

Cancer Expert MD helps patients organize that information so they can have more productive discussions with their own medical teams.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make personalized cancer information more understandable and accessible.

We believe patients benefit from understanding the biology of their cancer, the purpose of available testing, the major categories of treatment, the role of supportive strategies, and the rapidly changing landscape of cancer research.

Education can help patients become more confident participants in decisions about their care.
